The Department of Journalism, part of the SH School of Communication — the media campus of Sacred Heart College (Autonomous), Thevara, stands as a prominent centre of academic and professional excellence in media education. Established in 2012, the department is committed to shaping skilled, ethical, and socially conscious journalists who can navigate the evolving media landscape with integrity and creativity. Led by a team of experienced academics and media professionals, the department combines academic rigour with practical training, supported by personalised mentorship and immersive field experiences. Initiatives such as Industry Media Connect and the Media Association foster student interaction with leading media houses, renowned journalists, and media executives through workshops, seminars, and internships. Flagship events like the Thevara Literature Festival and the Chavara Media Awards connect students with distinguished figures such as Rajdeep Sardesai and Thomas Jacob, encouraging responsible and impactful storytelling. The department also leads a U.S. Consulate-funded Media Literacy Programme across Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka, and has hosted a Conclave on Misinformation and Disinformation to promote critical media awareness. As an active part of the college’s Media and Public Relations Team, the department contributes to shaping the institution’s public image.
